Anslem Douglas For COTT Symposium

Trinidad and Tobago's own Anslem Douglas, whose composition "Doggie" (Who Let the Dogs Out) won the Best Dance video award at the 2000 Grammy Awards, is to be the feature presenter at the Copyright Organisation's songwriting symposium next week.
"Mechanics of Success"
"Who Let the Dogs Out" became the North American novelty hit of 2000 when it was covered by the Baha Men of Bahamas, and in his presentation, Douglas will discuss the mechanics of the success of his composition. Noted Caribbean journalist Julian Rogers will moderate the feature presentation. The COTT symposium, "Music Business 101 - Making Songwriting Your Career", will be held at the Cascadia Hotel, St Ann's on 29 and 30 November 2001.
International Presenters
Main presenters include Andrew Sanders of ASCAP and Charles Sanders of the Harry Fox Agency, who will discuss the sources of income from songwriting. They will be joined by professionals in song and music composition, video production and entertainment law. These include Jamaican entertainment lawyer Lloyd Stanbury; British songwriter Guy Fletcher, who is chairman of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters and Paul Spurgeon, General Counsel to the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN).
Caribbean Presenters
The local presenters will include composer, television producer and presenter Alvin Daniell; attorney-at-law and COTT's President Allison Demas; attorney-at-law and songwriter Christophe Grant; video producer Danielle Dieffenthaller of Earth TV and singer/songwriter David Rudder. COTT is inviting songwriters, music publishers, musicians and people involved in the advertising, film and video industries, and those interested in careers in the music industry to sign up for the two days of lectures and discussions.
Fourth Annual COTT Music Awards
The 4th Annual COTT Music Awards will be held on Thursday November 29, 2001 at the St. James Amphitheatre. The event is strictly by invitation only and registrants at the "Music Business 101 - Making Songwriting Your Career" symposium are also invited. COTT's Music Awards are designed to recognise and pay tribute to the composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers who are members of the Organisation and who have made their contribution to the local music industry. The criteria is based on performance activity such as airplay and public performances of music as reflected in the performance data collected by COTT for the purpose of royalty distributions.
Registration
The cost is COTT members TT $300, non-members TT $450 and Caribbean participants US$75. "Music Business 101 - Making Songwriting Your Career", is part of COTT's initiative to stimulate the development of the music industry, and will be followed by a symposium for mixing engineers next year.
