Hilite Survival Tip

The first step in the process of releasing your music is recording it. When shopping for a studio, be discriminating. Before deciding you should:

  • Take a site tour
  • Listen to material the studio has produced in your genre
  • Speak to the engineers and producers who may work on your project
  • Bring all your musicians to the studio before you make a commitment to ensure everyone's comfort
  • Talk to others who've worked at the studio to get their impressions

Don't get swept away when checking out a studio's gear. Bear in mind that the gear is useless unless it helps your project!

Other things you may want to consider:

  • Security of the premises
  • Convenience of payment method options
  • Agreeing in writing who owns the rights to the music and the rights to the master recording before the recording is released!

Above all, make sure that everyone who gets involved gets along. Recording can be a very expensive, emotionally draining, and physically demanding process. You wouldn't want anything working against the production of your music especially when you're investing your hard earned dollars!

What is a play List?

A Play List is a form designed to collect information about songs performed at various live events.
  • Do you perform live?
  • Would you like to collect royalties for these live performances?

If the answers to these questions are yes then here is what you need to do.

  1. Collect a play list from COTT's office and make as many copies as needed.
  2. After each local live performance complete a play list form.
  3. At least once per month submit to COTT's office.

Help us to help you collect what is rightly yours!
