What's on the beat for COTT members, COTT licensees and those interested in the local music industry.
While COTT is pleased that the musical works of some of its more mature members continue to inspire current musical fare, it hastens to remind all users of prior works of their obligation to obtain the requisite authorisations before proceeding to use such works. Indeed, it is only because such prior authorisation was not obtained in this instance that the current controversy has erupted. In this regard, COTT is doing its best to ensure that it is expeditiously resolved to the satisfaction of all relevant parties, all of whom, coincidentally, are members of the organisation.
This being the case, COTT is somewhat surprised by a report appearing in one of the daily print media, claiming, inter alia, that Mr. Watson had been contacted some time ago by the song’s producers, and had given his approval for the project. COTT has confirmed with Mr. Watson that he was made aware of the song’s existence by a local radio station and first heard the recording at COTT’s offices, this having been since its release.
Furthermore, given COTT’s prominent and well-known address and telephone numbers, we view with some scepticism additional claims in the said article that numerous attempts by the producers to contact COTT were unsuccessful.
